Are you (temporarily) moving to the Netherlands? Then there are a few things you should organise shortly after your arrival, such as health insurance. But how can you get health insurance in the Netherlands and which documents are necessary to complete your registration? You’ll read all about it on this page.
After registering as a resident in the Netherlands, it is important to choose the right basic insurance and (optional) additional insurance for your needs. Depending on your choice of additional insurance, some costs which are not (fully) covered within the basic insurance, like dental care and coverage abroad, will be partly reimbursed. After your online application for health insurance, you'll get access to a secure a.s.r. account using your DigiD . In this account, you can check the status of your application, see invoices, make payments, and adjust your health insurance. Communication like requests for additional information or documentation will also be sent to your account.

Are you moving to the Netherlands as a national of a country within the EU? After your registration at the municipality, we’ll need a copy of your Passport to complete your application for health insurance. Will you only be working in the Netherlands or working for a Dutch company, but are you not going to be living in the Netherlands? Besides a copy of your Passport, we’ll also need a payslip or employment contract.
Are you moving to the Netherlands as a national of a country outside the EU? We’ll need a copy of the front and back of your resident permit to complete your request for health insurance.
As a foreign student, you can only apply for Dutch health insurance if you’ll be working in the Netherlands. To complete your health insurance application, we’ll need a copy of your Passport and payslip. Are you a non-EU national? In addition to your payslip we’ll also need a copy of the front and back of your resident permit.
If you’ll be moving to the Netherlands as an expat, we’ll need a copy of the front and back of your resident permit and an employer contract or a recent payslip to complete your application. Please note: the employer contract or payslip must state the starting date of your employment in the Netherlands. Your salary may be blurred out of the payslip.
Will you be moving to the Netherlands to follow an internship? Then you can only request health insurance if your salary or compensation is above the average minimum wage. In this case we’ll need a copy of your Passport and payslip. Are you a non-EU national? Besides your payslip we’ll also need a copy of the front and back of your resident permit. Please note: If your salary or compensations is below the average minimum wage, you’re not eligible for Dutch health insurance.
After applying for health insurance at a.s.r. you can easily upload additional documents through your a.s.r. account. Are you still waiting for your DigiD? Then you can also upload your documents through our secured upload page.

Anyone living or working in the Netherlands is obligated to have basic health insurance. To prevent being uninsured for a certain period of time it is important to submit your application within 4 months after your arrival in the Netherlands.
What does this mean? In case you’ve been registered as a resident of the Netherlands starting February 1st, you have to apply for health insurance before June 1st. Were you not able to apply within 4 months but have you incurred health costs in the meantime? Then you won’t be able to declare these costs to us. Yes, Dutch law allows us to set back the starting date of your health insurance for up to four months. We'll determine the exact starting date based on several factors. Have you been registered as a resident of the Netherlands starting February 1st? Then you have to apply for health insurance before June 1st to be insured for health care in the Netherlands.

To ease your application process, it is recommended to request a personal DigiD provided by the Dutch government. Why? From the moment you apply for health insurance at a.s.r. you’ll be granted access to your a.s.r. account which uses DigiD as a secure login method.
In your personal a.s.r. account you can manage and adjust your health insurance. Any form of communication or correspondence, such as requests for additional information or documentation, will also be sent to your account. Have you set a preference for paper communication during your application? Then we’ll send you a letter.
In the Netherlands you take out health insurance until December 31st. It is not possible to cancel your health insurance prematurely, unless you deregister from the Netherlands before this date. Are you only working in the Netherlands or working for a Dutch company? Then you can only cancel your health insurance prematurely when your contract has ended. You can notify us of your deregistration or contract termination through your a.s.r. account by clicking the button below.
