Purchase of a special partner’s pension

You and your partner have separated, but you are still entitled to part of his or her pension capital. You can use the part to which you are entitled to purchase a partner’s pension on the retirement date of your ex-partner. This is called a special partner’s pension. You will receive this special partner’s pension when your ex-partner dies after reaching his or her retirement date.
How much pension capital will you have?

That depends on the pension capital your ex-partner has accrued in the form of guaranteed capital or investments.

  • If your ex-partner has guaranteed capital, the capital earmarked for special partner’s pension is also guaranteed and the amount of pension capital that will be available for you to purchase a special partner’s pension is already known.
  • If your ex-partner’s pension capital has been placed in investment funds, the amount of the pension capital depends on the prices of the investment funds and the costs. We can only determine how much pension capital will actually become available for you on the retirement date of your ex-partner.

Some months before your ex-partner’s retirement date, you will receive a letter from us about the amount of the pension capital and what you must do. If your ex-partner’s pension capital has been placed in investment funds, you will find a ‘provisional’ statement of your pension capital enclosed with this letter.

Please note: this letter does not contain any reference to pension equalization. Upon separation, you may be entitled not only to a special partner’s pension but also to part of your ex-partner’s retirement pension. Whether this is the case depends on the choices your ex-partner makes in respect of his or her pension capital. To make this possible, he or she must use this pension capital to purchase a retirement pension on the retirement date.

This can be done either with us or with another insurer. Whether your part of the retirement pension will be paid out by us or by another insurer is therefore not yet known. Nor is it yet known how much your part will be. As soon as we have more information on this, we will share it with you.
What action should you take?
Once you have received the letter, please follow the step-by-step plan described below in order to purchase a special partner’s pension with your part of the retirement pension.
When are you eligible for special partner’s pension?

You are eligible for special partner’s pension if your ex-partner dies after his or her retirement date. You will then receive a fixed monthly benefit for as long as you live.
