We prefer not to think about it. But what will happen if you were to die? What will the financial consequences for your partner be? What income will your partner have? Not only will your salary stop, the government has also imposed major restrictions on the surviving dependants’ provision (the Anw) in recent years. The Anw gap pension ensures that your partner has a stable income until the statutory retirement age.

Everything you need to know about the Anw gap pension
This is how the a.s.r. Anw gap pension works
- An Anw gap pension is a personal pension plan that provides your partner with a monthly benefit if you were to die. The insured amount is € 19,331.16 gross per year.
- You participate in the Anw gap pension via your employer on a voluntary basis
- It is a risk-based insurance. That means that you do not accrue a value.
- If you were to die during your participation, the insurance will provide your partner with an annual gross benefit of € 19.331,16 until he or she reaches the statutory retirement age (maximum 68 years of age). This amount comes on top of the lifelong partner's pension on the basis of your pension scheme and any government benefits.
This is how to register for the a.s.r. Anw gap pension

What conditions do we set on participation in the Anw gap pension?
- When entering service
- When entering into a marriage or a registered partnership
- When entering into a joint household
In these situation, you must register within two months. After this period, we ask supplementary medical questions.
Restrictions and exclusions
In a number of situations we do not pay out or we pay out less:
- If you were to die within a year and this death was expected at the time of registration
- If you were to die within two years of commencing participation as a result of suicide
- If you take out Anw gap insurance via another employer, we will only pay out the difference (€ 1,034.70 less the payment from the other Anw gap scheme)
When will your partner receive an Anw benefit from the government?
- You must be living or working in the Netherlands at the time of your death
- Your partner most be younger than the statutory retirement age
Your partner must also meet one of the following conditions:
- Your partner must be incapacitated for work for at least 45%
- Your partner is caring for a child younger than 18
- Your partner is pregnant
The right to an Anw benefit is therefore very limited. The benefit will be reduced if your partner has his or her own income. And the benefit will end when your youngest child reaches the age of 18.
What is the level of the Anw benefit from the government?
- The maximum level of the Anw benefit including holiday and other allowances amounts to € 19.331,16 per year (as of 1 January 2024)
- The Anw benefit from the government depends to some extent on the income of the surviving partner. An Anw benefit will be reduced if the surviving partner has his or her own income. The benefit will even be reduced entirely if the income of the surviving partner amounts to more than € 3,274.96 per month.
It is likely that your partner will not be eligible for an Anw benefit from the government. This will mean a major reduction in income. We call this an Anw gap. To limit this gap, your employer offers you the possibility to participate in a voluntary supplementary Anw gap pension. If you participate, you pay your own contribution.
What does the Anw gap pension cost?
- Your employer will withhold the premium from your salary
- Your employer has made arrangements with us regarding the level of the premium. If those arrangements change, your premium will change too.
- Your premium amount is an annual amount. If you take out Anw gap pension insurance during the course of the year, you will pay premium only for the months that you participate.
Will my Anw gap pension be supplemented?
Once your Anw gap pension has commenced, we will not increase the benefit. In other words, we will not supplement an Anw gap pension that has commenced.
