Cancel or terminate your health insurance

Cancel or terminate your health insurance

Your health insurance is taken out for a full calendar year, with the standard start date being January 1st. Terminating midterm is only possible in a few cases. Has your health insurance not started yet, or have you changed your mind within 14 days after the issuance of your new insurance? Then you can use the right of withdrawal. Below, we explain how and when you can cancel or terminate your health insurance with a.s.r.

Cancelling or switching health insurance

You can cancel your health insurance or switch to another insurer until December 31st. If we receive your cancellation on January 1st or after, we can only cancel your health insurance as of January 1st of the following year. Cancelling midterm is possible in a few cases, for example if you are moving abroad. Read more about these exceptions here. You can cancel or change your supplementary insurance until February 1st.
Cancelling or switching can be done in two different ways:

  • Automatic switching service

Most health insurers offer a switching service. If you use this, your current health insurance will be automatically cancelled by your new insurer. You don’t need to do anything yourself.

  • Log in to your a.s.r. account

You can cancel your (supplementary) health insurance by logging in to your a.s.r. account below and submitting your change or termination. As soon as we have processed your request, you will receive a message.

Please note!

Do you have unpaid bills? Then it is not possible to cancel and switch to another health insurer. This is legally regulated. If you have paid your full outstanding balance before January 1st, you can cancel or switch.

Cancelling your health insurance

Thanks to the right of withdrawal, you can always cancel your health insurance within 14 days of commencement or issuance of your insurance. How this works depends on your situation:

  • The insurance has not started yet

You can always cancel your new insurance if it has not started yet. If you take out your new insurance on October 1st with a start date of January 1st, you can even cancel without any problems until January 14th.

  • The insurance has already started

Have we issued the insurance on January 1st? Then you can use the right of withdrawal until January 14th. Any payments that have already been made at that time will be automatically refunded to your account, after we have processed the cancellation.

How do I use my right of withdrawal?

  1. Call our customer service.
  2. Send us a message via our chat function with your name, postcode, and house number clearly stating that you want to cancel your health insurance.

Please note!

It is mandatory to have health insurance in the Netherlands. Have you cancelled or terminated your current insurance, but not yet taken out a new insurance? Do this no later than February 1st of the new insurance year.
